Two Fridays ago, our class went to the property across the road from Riverside Public School.
In the morning we played a fur trade game similar to the one we played at Yearley. Most players received a plastic bag and they had to trade survival items with each other such as fur, canoes, snowshoes, moccasins, muskets, flint, steel pots and blankets. Half of us were First Nations people and half were Europeans. A few of us were diseases such as smallpox ,measles, scurvy or just cold. Cold and scurvy took the lives of Europeans in the game and small pox and measles took the lives of First Nations people. It was a very fun game, although not many of us survived!
Next we were put in groups of six and we walked around looking for labeled trees that we had to identify using a key.
With Mme Cotterchio, we made maps of the property. As we walked around the property, we individually drew details such as rocks, hills, trees and native encampments(forts) onto construction paper. We also used a compass to show which was magnetic north, south, east and west. We also made legends to show all of the things we put on our maps. by Katie and Wilson
