Create your own treasure map project (math) due next Thursday, January 14th

Create your own treasure map!
File:Treasure Island Map

Name:  _______________________________

Date due:  Thursday, January 14, 2016

The Challenge:  Hide the same *treasure five times on your map in five different locations.  Move your treasure using two different types of transformations (translations and reflections) if you are in Grade 5 and using three different types of transformations (translations, reflections and rotations) if you are in Grade 6.  Guide someone to each of the treasure locations using math language.  (Note that another student in the class will test out your directions to see if they lead them to all of the locations of the treasure.)
Be sure to include the type of transformation involved
the number of units you must move (or in the case of a reflection,
across which line should you reflect the object), and
the direction of the transformation  (“the new dinosaur”)
Example:  Do a translation three spaces to the right and two spaces up to the large oak tree.  The gold nugget is buried underneath this tree.
Reflect across the shining stream to the other bank to find the second location of the treasure.
Rotate 90 degrees clockwise about point X to the find the next location of the treasure.

*Your treasure must include at least three vertices.

Success Criteria Checklist:  Create your own treasure map

Date due:  Thursday, January 14, 2016

On a rough copy  of a map, I’ve hidden a treasure (that contains at least three points) in five different locations, using translations, reflections and rotations (6e only).

I’ve described, using math language, how to move from one location to another.

I’ve had a conference with Mme Lindsay re: my rough copy (by at least Friday, January 8th)

I’ve create a good copy of my treasure map that includes a legend and title for someone to solve.  (This one doesn’t include the locations of the treasure.)

I’ve created a good copy of the directions to my treasure.  All of the directions include the type of transformation, number of units  and direction  of the transformation.

I’ve created the good copy of an answer map that shows all of the five locations of the treasure.
