Classroom Update! December 7, 2015

Our trip to Bracebridge
As most of you may know, we are responsible for the compost and recycling for HPS! So our wonderful principal, Mr. Jewiss, let us go on a trip to the Bracebridge Recycling Plant to understand where the recycling goes and why it's so important to recycle.
We took a tour of the plant with Quinn and spoke about the things we saw.  We actually found out that you can recycle ripped\old socks and jeans - just take off buttons or zippers and put them in a plastic bag with a piece of fabric as a tie.We saw the hard workers separate the glass from the plastic and so forth. Later on that day we traveled to the place were non-recyclable items go.  We finished the day by having the Bracebridge pool, diving board and waterslide all to ourselves!

With Mme Brophy, we've been doing French stations while she reads with small groups of students.   For example, we've been playing French scrabble and des Mimes et Singerie
.
In science we are learning about flight .Wednesday we watched a video of Bill Nye and the Bernoulli effect.

Note:  After studying how the properties of air affect flight with some hands-on experiments,
the students in our class are often found creating and racing their new flying objects.  They've named their race series the "Windy 500". :)  Note:  Hidden fact:  Bernoulli's first name is Daniel.

Une nouvelle esp
èce?
Be sure to check out the French newspaper articles that the students in our class wrote, as they are now posted on the bulletin board outside of our classroom.  As well as writing (in French) within the format of a newspaper article, students practiced using the Google Read and Write app to help them with spelling and word prediction.  There is some really imaginative writing about creatures that range from flying wolves to swimming monkeys!

Math news
After 'weighing in' on the concept of mass through hands-on activities and practice converting g to kg and vice versa, we are now focusing on locating places precisely on a grid and movement within a grid.  Students are working towards 'hiding' five objects within the grid of an imaginary land that they create and then providing precise instructions re: how to move through slides, flips and turns to reach the objects.  More information to follow...

Progress Reports and Parent/Teacher Interviews
Progress reports will be sent home with your child this Friday, December 11th.  Along with the progress report, we will send along a note indicating whether or not we are requesting an interview regarding your child's progress at this time.  (Note that you can still sign up for an interview, even if one isn't requested from us.)  Interviews will take place from 3:45 - 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 12th.  We thought that the New Year would be a better time to take some time and reflect and set some new learning goals for 2016.

Special Christmas Activities
It's hard to believe it but the Christmas season is here!  As well as some school-wide dress up days (see list below), we will be having a Secret Santa Gift Exchange within our classroom.  Students will choose a student from our classroom and make and/or buy three small gifts (limit of $5 total for all three gifts) that will be delivered to our classroom tree with a hint re: the provider on Dec. 16, 17 & 18.

Monday, December 14:  Crazy Hat Day
Tuesday, December 15:  Xmas Colours
Wednesday, December 16:  PJ Day
Thursday, December 17:  Crazy Hair Day
Friday, December 18:  Xmas Character Day
