As part of our study of Biodiversity in Science, the students in our class recently created a new species and presented it to our class. For instance, meet "Blobby"!
As well as explaining to which class or classes of vertebrate their new species belonged, students had to identify how their new species contributed to the biodiversity of its region.
Related to this assignment, the students are now writing a magazine article about their newly discovered species in French, using Google Drive and Google Read and Write. Google Drive allows them to access their writing from any device and Google Read and Write has all sorts of functions, including the ability to predict the French words they are typing, highlight potential spelling or grammatical errors and help students to build their own vocabulary lists. This writing assignment is due this Friday, November 13. The success criteria checklist for this assignment is under the Resource section for the blog.
Becoming flexible with numbers and developing a number sense has been the focus in Math so far this fall. To that end, students have been comparing and representing both very large numbers (up to one million for Gr. 6's) and decimal numbers (up to the thousandths ex. 0.346 for Gr. 6's). We have been developing and sharing a variety of different strategies to add, subtract, multiply and divide these numbers. Please note that the Gr. 6 students are expected to present a number that involves decimals at least to the hundredths (ex. 3.85) and its connection to a real-world fact this week. A test to evaluate all of the students' understanding of number concepts is coming up soon.
